There’s a version of home that exists to be photographed. Everything in its place, nothing in use, a bowl of lemons nobody will eat.
I’m not interested in that. I’m interested in the house you actually live in — where things get used, and moved, and put back, and where the point is how it feels at seven in the evening rather than how it looks in a photograph.
Never paper.
The china and the crystal come out for every meal. Not for guests, not for occasions — for a Tuesday, for one person, for whatever’s being eaten.
I know the argument against. They break, they don’t go in the dishwasher, they’re for good. But things kept for good get used four times a year and spend the rest of their lives in a cupboard, which is a strange fate for something you chose because it was beautiful.
Use them. Break some. The ones that survive will have been worth it.
Treat people the way you’d want to be treated.
That’s the whole method for having anyone over. Not a performance — attention. The meal thought about rather than assembled. Plated properly, even when it’s simple. The extra ten minutes that nobody will name and everybody will notice.
Presentation isn’t formality. It’s the visible part of having bothered.
What earns its place.
Things you touch every day deserve the most attention and usually get the least. The glass you drink from. The sheets. The pan. The light in the room at the hour you’re actually in it.
Nobody notices a beautiful vase in a room lit badly.
What you’ll find here.
The table, the kitchen, the small design choices, the rituals of care. Seasonal moments and how to mark them without a production. And the things worth buying once.
